Delta Wood Finishing was set up to respond to the demand from customers to reuse their existing furniture. The company offers furniture paint finishing, spray finishing, colour matching, stain, and lacquer as well as repair and restoration services to residential clients. Delta Wood Finishing breathes new life into furniture with top refinishing. Tom Perkins, Founder & CEO of Delta Wood Finishing, the independent wood finishing company, filled in Herts Review about the strides the business has made so far.
Tom’s background as an Artist and Craftsman means he likes creating stuff. 25 years ago, he established a specialist craft furniture company which designs and produces bespoke furniture for both commercial and residential clients in the UK and around the globe. The success of this business also led to requests to update or change the look of old furniture. The experience of running a bespoke furniture company where joinery and painting are key tasks has come in handy. The demand for a furniture refinishing service led Tom to establish Delta Wood Finishing to focus on the refinishing service. Delta Wood Finishing Ltd started trading in 2014 and has since established itself as the go-to company for quality furniture refinishing work in Essex and surrounding areas.
“So far demand has been great. The team are always working on different projects. We get a lot of recommendations from our customers and from our other business as well. The internet has played a major role in our business. We advertise our services on Facebook and at the moment over 70% of our business comes from Facebook”. In addition, the company’s workshop/production facility is based in a prominent location in Clavering in Saffron Walden, Essex. “Renowned TV Chef, Jamie Oliver’s family run a pub, The Cricketers, in the area so a lot of people come around here and we get enquiries”.
With a lot of demand are there plans for expansion in the future? “Not really. We want to maintain a steady ship. I did not get into this trade from a business perspective only. I got in because I love creating beautiful things which my customers and I appreciate. Finding the right kind of people, training and managing them can be quite challenging. Besides, when I tried this in the past, it meant I spent more of my time managing people. That is not what I want. I love being hands on. So, we are currently a small team of 2. That way we provide personalised services to our customers and our standards are not compromised”.
Tom has drawn on his experience running his other furniture business to run Delta Wood Finishing where he has maintained a small operation so that the attention to detail and personalised service to customers is the key focus. He loves the fact that the company delivers specialised and quality work. This also means they choose the projects they work on.
Fortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic that has adversely affected lots of businesses has had little impact on Delta Wood Finishing. “We have been pretty busy throughout the last 6 months. Fortunately, it has not changed our way of working as I could be in the paint workshop while someone else is working in the joinery workshop. There have been minor issues though. For instance, we normally use masks in the workshop, and we had a challenge getting more supplies at the height of the pandemic as demand for other uses soared”.
